MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
OVERALL SUCCESS EVALUATION

Assessing social-ecological benefits and management performance of MPAs
Humanity depends on the global ocean for its survival and well-being.

The unsustainable use of marine resources is jeopardizing marine biodiversity and the benefits it provides.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are the cornerstones of marine conservation globally. They are identified as one of the main area-based tools in international commitments to protect the ocean. By regulating human activities inside their borders, MPAs help improving the health of our oceans delivering many benefits to nature and people.

To achieve sustainability goals, simply designating a protected area is not sufficient. MPAs need to be implemented and actively managed through monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management.

The Marine protected areas Overall Success Evaluation (MOSE) framework provides a useful tool to inform the adaptive management process, assessing the social-ecological benefits and the management performance of MPAs.
MPAs help conserve marine biodiversity, from species to ecosystems
MPA benefits to people encompass the economic and social spheres, supporting tourism and local traditions
